Functional Braces FAQs

What is a functional brace?

A functional brace usually (but not always) has two parts, one fitted to the upper teeth and one to the lower teeth. Both parts must be worn for the brace to work. The brace pushes your lower jaw forwards, using plastic blocks to guide you into the correct position. The brace reduces the amount your top teeth stick out!

How much do I need to wear the brace?

All the time apart form eating, cleaning and contact sports. It will only work if consistently worn about 22 out of every 24 hours.

How long will I need to wear it?

For about 12 months, as long as it is worn for about 22 hours every day during this period.

How often will I need to be seen?

About every 10-12 weeks.

How do I clean the brace?

You should clean the brace with your toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste every time you clean your teeth, which should be 2-3 times a day. You should remove the brace to clean your teeth.

You can also purchase brace cleaning tablets from our reception which can be used on a weekly basis.

What do I do if my brace breaks?

Please contact us and we will advise if an additional appointment is required. Please DO NOT wait until your next routine appointment as this could delay treatment.

How will my speech be affected?

It takes a few days to get used to speaking with your new brace. You will have a lisp to start with. We advise talking lots or reading aloud from a book to help your tongue adapt to the new brace.
