Invisalign® FAQs

Invisalign® treatment consists of a series of clear, almost invisible aligners. They are custom - made for each patient. Each aligner is worn for two to three weeks before progressing on to the next one. Each aligner is very slightly  different from the previous one and these subtle changes are what cause the teeth to gradually move towards their final position.

The best possible result will be achieved if you:

  • DO wear your aligned 22-24 hours every day
  • DO wear each aligner for a minimum of 14 days
  • DON'T skip aligners
  • DON'T throw aligners away

Does Invisalign® hurt?

As with all appliance systems there may be periods of some discomfort. This may occur when you start to wear a new aligner which feels tighter than the previous one. Painkillers will help alleviate any discomfort.

Can I eat with my aligners in?

No, aligners need to be removed for eating. They should be kept in a box whilst out of the mouth to help prevent loss and breakage.

Can I drink with my aligners in?

You can drink cold water. Aligners should be removed to drink coloured, acidic, high sugar content and hot fluids.

Can I smoke with aligners in?

No, the aligners will stain. We would recommend seeking advice to help stop smoking.

Will aligners change my speech?

You may have a slight lisp for the first few days of treatment. However, as your mouth and tongue adapt this will fade.

How do I keep aligners clean?

You should use your toothbrush and cold water (NO TOOTHPASTE). Hot water will distort the aligner. Aligner cleaning tablets will be recommended when your aligners are fitted.

What if I loose an aligner?

Please call us and will advise. It may be necessary to order a replacement. In the meantime please put in your previous aligner.

Will I need a retainer at the end of treatment?

Yes. Retention is necessary after all orthodontic treatment. The type of retention required will be discussed before your start treatment.
